On May 28th, 2008 Honiss School dedicated a tree in memory of Meghan - this is what Vice Principal Lopez had to say; With this wreath we commemorate and honor the life of Meghan McGrady, who succumbed to her battle with ovarian cancer this previous October, taken from us much too early in life. Meghan was a product of the Dumont School System, having attended Honiss School from Kindergarten through 8th grade, where she graduated from in 1999, as well as Dumont High School, where she graduated from in 2003. Her former teachers remember a student who was a true individual in every sense of the word. Never content with just following the status quo, Meghan remained confident in her beliefs and ideals, and stood up for what she believed was right. Hers was a voice that demanded to be heard. Meghan made the most of her formative years at Honiss School and went on to excel at Rutgers University, where she was a frequent recipient of Dean’s List honors. While away at college, Meghan worked as a fundraiser and did volunteer work for children with cancer and blood disorders. It was also at Rutgers where she realized her calling in life; Meghan decided to pursue her Master’s degree at Rutgers Graduate School of Education in order to become a teacher. After 3 years as a substitute teacher for Cresskill Public schools, it seemed a logical choice for someone as driven, responsible, and thoughtful as Meghan. Sadly, Meghan left us before she could fulfill her life’s vocation as an educator and raise awareness about the disease that took her life. Her memory and contributions, however, will always live on. Meghan is survived by her younger brother, Dan, and her mother, Cheryl. Please join me in a moment of silence in remembrance of Meghan’s many accomplishments, and the positive impact she had on so many others’ lives. Thank you.
